Peter W. Hutchins, age 69, of Big Brook Road died Wednesday evening, January 23, 2013 at home.
Born on June 6, 1943 in Utica, New York, he was the second son of Ernest C. Hutchins, Sr., and Ethel (Decker) Hutchins. He attended Indian Lake Central School then enlisted in the United States Army in Germany serving from May 1965 until April 1967.
Shortly after, he relocated to Rochester and began working in floor covering and also on the Hill family farm in Caledonia, New York, which he remembered fondly throughout his lifetime.
In the mid 1970's Pete moved back to Indian Lake and established Pete Hutchins Floor Covering, his business for 37 years. He married Nancy L. (Foster) Delcore on June 26, 1976 at his family's homestead in Indian Lake.
Pete's hobbies and interests were many. He loved motorcycles and was an avid motorcyclist. He cherished his and Nancy's honeymoon and anniversary adventures on their 1974 MotoGuzzi. Pete was a dedicated and immensely skilled woodworker honing his craft and artistry later in life by lathe turning slabs and burls to create stunning wooden bowls and vases. He appreciated, collected and restored antique tools and knives and was a life member of the National Rifle Association. In late spring and summer, Pete could often be found in his vegetable gardens, planting and nurturing seedlings, especially squash. Pete was a self-taught harmonica player and a fan of several regional bands and professional musicians. He appreciated photography and often carried his camera documenting his interests and experiences. Later in life, he discovered creative writing when he was inspired to author a short story.
Above all, Pete dedicated his life to Christian faith witnessed by his service to fellow-men and women, particularly through various recovery programs. He was a longtime and committed member of the Indian Lake Volunteer Ambulance Corp. Together he and Nancy recently became members of Tupper Lake Christian Center. Pete's many bibles and Christian devotionals were always close at hand and provided guidance, strength, peace and comfort throughout his lifetime.
He was predeceased by his parents and oldest brother Ernest C. "Kip" Hutchins, Jr.
