ethel may willard edmonds oct 27, 1920 - jan 22, 2013
Ethel May Willard Edmonds, 92, passed on Tuesday, January 22 at Elizabethtown Community Hospital. Born on October 27, 1920 in Presque Isle, Maine, she was the fifth child of Samuel and Alvada Condon Willard.
When Ethel was quite young her mother passed so she was sent to live with her aunt, uncle, and two older cousins in New Jersey. Later her father married Etta Johnston, a teacher, and they bought a dairy farm in Moriah. Ethel was surprised to learn she had two older brothers and two older sisters when she was reunited with her father.
Ethel loved to roller skate, go to the movies, and always loved to brag that she sang on the radio. Her chores on the dairy farm included washing milk bottles, and helping her father deliver milk to his customers.
Later when Ethel was 18 she worked at Putnam Camp, St. Huberts, where she met Augustus (Gussie) Edmonds, while he was doing some carpentry there. They were married on December 7, 1940. Two years later their first daughter, Linda, was born. Gussie was drafted into service (WWII) as was Dave and Hannibal Edmonds. Ethel and Linda went back to Moriah to live with her father and stepmother. Gussie was stationed in Texas and was sent to Europe.
When the war ended Gussie was discharged from the service. He and Ethel bought the home in Keene Valley, which became Ethel's home for 68 years. The second child, Anne, arrived and then the third child, Nancy.
Ethel worked mainly seasonal jobs so she could attend to her own children. She liked to take her daughters to Lincoln Pond to swim where Gus would join them for a picnic after fishing.
Augustus passed in 1994 from illness. Ethel learned to do most everything herself. She was often seen on her lawn mower because she loved being outside. She was a independent lady and very determined to take care of the yard by herself.
For the past several years she received meals-on-wheels. She was very fond of all the volunteers who showed up at lunch time. Her visits with them meant the world to her. She also was very fond of Wendy Preston, from the Office of the Aging, and many other friends and neighbors who would stop by to check on her and visit a while.
Ethel is predeceased by Augustus, all of her siblings and their spouses, and her son-in-law Ronald Brown. She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Brown of Malta, NY, Anne Stephens and her husband, Blair, of Littleton, North Carolina, and Nancy Gonyea and her husband, Wesley, of Wilmington, NY. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; Kim Bowman, Traci Brown, Jeff Brown, Keith Stephens, Travis Stephens, Stephanie Gates, Jennifer Call, and Nadine Hathaway, sixteen great grandchildren; Lauren, Grant, Torrin, Cooper, Tripp, Ainsleigh, Grace, Blair, Karissa, Tyler, Matthew, Makenzie, Cody, Whitney, Emma, and Elyse. At the time of her passing there were three great great grandchildren; Justice, Ragen, and Layla. A fourth, Aubrey, was born a month after Ethel's passing.
Ethel was so grateful to the volunteer ambulance squad. She called on them quite often to assist her. Any donation to the Keene Valley Fire Department in Ethel's memory would be greatly appreciated.
Burial will be at Norton Cemetery in Keene, on Friday May 10, 2013, at 11am with Reverend Fred Shaw, from the United Church of Christ, Elizabethtown, officiating, followed by a luncheon at Ethel's home in Keene Valley.
Always remember Ethel for her big smile, laughter and her big waves as she rode on her lawn mower.
