Ticonderoga. Shirley Spring Whitty, 85, of Ticonderoga, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 6, 2013, in the care of her family and High Peaks Hospice.
Born Shirley Elizabeth Spring on August 26, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Stoughton and Thelma (Grimes) Spring from Ticonderoga.
Shirley moved many places during her childhood, but moved back to the Ticonderoga area and graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1945.
She married her husband, James R. Whitty on May 18, 1947 in Ticonderoga. They have been blessed with 65 years of marriage.
She worked as a telephone operator in the Ticonderoga offices and was a bookkeeper at NAPA Auto Parts.
Shirley was a volunteer in the United Methodist Church serving on various committees, teaching Sunday School and a Sunday School Superintendent. She was an avid seamstress making clothes for her family and making toys and crafts for the Church bazaars.
She enjoyed traveling, gardening, flowers and bird watching. She was a member of the Eastern Star and the Carillon Garden Club. Anyone who knows Shirley, knows her love for life was abundant and fulfilled.
She lived in several places during her adulthood, including Ticonderoga and Crown Point, NY, Jay, Maine, and Madison Heights, Virginia.
Shirley is pre-deceased by her parents, Stoughton and Thelma (Grimes) Spring; her brother, Robert Spring; her half-sister, Stephanie (Spring) Wolfe; and her son, Brent Bevins Whitty.
Survivors include her husband, James Whitty of Ticonderoga; her children, Melissa (Whitty) and James Brand of Burke, NY, Stephanie (Whitty) and Joseph Haas of Frankford, DE, and Craig and Vickie Whitty of Killeen, TX; her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Dolly (Dolores Spring) and Lawrence Barber of Ticonderoga; her brothers Jon and Alice Spring of Holiday, FL and Douglas Spring and Lee Spring, both of Ticonderoga; her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Calling hours for relatives and friends were held Thursday, April 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1045 Wicker Street, Ticonderoga. A Funeral Service followed at 11:00 a.m. at the Church. The Rev. Scott Tyler, Pastor, officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga.
